…who are currently promoting the music production arts from their websites.

The problem is that a site which offers the services of an individual composer can hardly rank well for relevancy against the topic of film composition as a whole.

This is probably as it should be, because one thing a search engine cannot yet do is rate the quality of a film composer’s work and services, only the quality of the site and the relevancy to the search query. It cannot distinguish between the search for information about the general topic of composition for film & TV and that of a producer or director on the hunt for an appropriately skilled and priced composer for their production.

Film Music Composer Mark Slater

Before I was ever digging through code libraries looking for new script, messing around with css to manipulate html, writing php code to query databases for stored information or learning javascript to update web forms, I was an aspiring music producer.

Back then, I spent much of my time learning the music production arts, tweaking audio plug-ins in protools, experimenting with and sequencing new sounds from a triton music workstation and practicing my scales on a Roland keyboard.

It has been a while since I have totally immersed myself in music, but it still defines me.

It is the primary reason I have chosen to start building the Gighive brand on the producer category. Although the site has 18 total artist categories in all, it is usually the producer whose oversees and manages much of the music process and it’s on one I am most familiar with.

So at this point I am actively looking for and listing music producers from all corners of web. It is my hope that the service of many producers can rank well for relevancy against the topic of music production and producers as a whole. This is what the site is all about!

: ) It seems I have been all over the internet the past couple years building my knowledge base, but never on my own blog where I should have been chronicling the events of my startup(gighive). Again, I admit I have failed miserably at staying on top of it, but at least I am trying.

It’s funny, when I started this movement I truly thought my idea was so innovative that I would be rich in less than a year and that gighive would soon be the alternative default for independent artists; finally unseating the current sites myspace/facebook. Hahahaha… Wishful thinking right! Al least now I have a better understanding of the word ‘execution’.

I really though it was, build it, and artists will come to support you no matter what. OK. I get it now….and with a much better understanding of how things work on the internet. And yes I am still plugging away at the movement I started three years ago. You can say for the past couple years I have been paying my dues the hard way.

I went from being a naïve indie musician/producer who new nothing about web technology, search and social media – to hiring programmers to build a network – to becoming a full time web designer/programmer who is currently coding and rebuilding an entire web application from the ground up.

It’s ironic how I created gighive to build a network of quality artists that I could depend on to become a better artist. Now at present, I have no time to work on my music. All my resources and time have gone into building the application and working with artist who are willing and able to make the movement a reality.

So stay tuned for more and we will finally find out if the world is ready for a independent artist site like gighive.

I have spent the last three months up to my eyeballs in css, php, variables, databases, JavaScript, arrays, if/else statements and everything you can think of when it comes to website design and php coding.

I am glad I at least learned some of the basics. I now have a new understanding on what goes on behind the scenes of my networking site gighive. I am able to do much of the design work myself and even write some of my own scripts. Well not my own, but I do a lot of tweaking to someones else’s code I paid for. So yeah, its my code : )

But things are just getting heated as I finish the work on many of the new pages. At least now that I am not paying for updates, I can hire some new writers for our independent artist blog and give my editor some much needed help. Nice!

Nov. 24, 2008… We were all set to go with the launch of gighive. We painstakingly went over all the details months prior and you can say we were confident and ready. So what happened. We failed! But the good news, as a new start up we learned a valuable lesson. As a team we are only as strong as our weakest link. So you can say we are in the process of replacing that link.
